“Loving Island Life” Barn & Swerv Community Groups

Three cyclists ride past a building with an American flag painted on it, behind red and purple flower fields.

This week, we at “Loving Island Life” would like to introduce you to a couple of very cool groups on the island. BARN and SWERV, which we think are totally fun acronyms!

BARN – Bainbridge Artisan Resource Network
“Imagine a hands-on center for building, inventing, and fixing—a place open to people of all ages and skill levels. Imagine a creative hub where people learn, teach, share and inspire each other. Imagine BARN!”

BARN began in 2012 with collaboration between the Bainbridge Island Community Woodshop and local fiber artists, jewelry makers and other artisans. There are big plans for the permanent location of BARN and you can find out how to support this wonderful new community resource and read all about the progress that’s being made at Barn’s future home.
The current location features work areas, tools and equipment for woodworking, metal machining, jewelry making, electronic & technical arts, glass working, fiber arts, printmaking & book arts, and a writers’ studio. There may even be a few welding programs, weather permitting. To get involved contact a leader of the craft area you are interested in here, or check out classes and events to see the calendar of classes.
They are open every Sunday from 1 pm to 3 pm for a guided tour of the building. They will be happy to answer your questions about how to get started, how to connect to the studios that interest you, and how to become a member. No need to make a reservation; just stop by the bright yellow building at 11272 Sunrise Drive NE, kitty-corner from Bay Hay and Feed.
SWERV – Savvy Women Exchanging Relevant Views
This one is a little tricky, because you just sort of have to hear about it by word of mouth, but it’s a wonderful group of women who get together on the second Tuesday of the month to listen to very interesting speakers on a huge variety of subjects, ask questions, and socialize. All women are welcome, and when she can get away from work for a morning, you will see Karen there!

Come to the next meeting to get on the email list for upcoming speakers and meet some lovely women. You will feel very welcome and come away with some new ideas to think about. Here are the scheduled speakers for May and June. Karen hopes to see you there!
