“Loving Island Life” Memorial Day on Bainbridge Island

All of us at “Loving Island Life” have deep ties to the military, and on Memorial Day, which is Monday, May 30th, we hope you will join us as we pause to remember the heroes who have fallen protecting our country.  Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, started after the Civil War to pay tribute to the men who were lost during the war. Since then, the day has been set aside to show respect to all the men and women who have died in service to their country.

As a national holiday, many people associate Memorial Day with a day off work, a time for cookouts, or the official start of summer.  On Bainbridge Island, the weather is warming up, the days are long, and we have an abundance of beautiful parks for your first picnic of the summer season.  Here is a list of some of our favorites with a short description to help you choose the perfect spot!

Bloedel Reserve

Bloedel Reserve is a Bainbridge Island treasure, and is open year round from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm Tuesday – Sunday.  Typically closed on Monday, Bloedel Reserve is open for Memorial Day, which marks the start of their summer hours, 10:00 – 4:00 Tuesday and Wednesday, 10:00 am – 6:00 pm Thursday – Sunday. Visit their website for more information and to see amazingly beautiful photos.

Fay Bainbridge Park

Located at the North end of the island, you will find gorgeous views of the sound and Seattle.  Resident eagles share the park’s beautiful driftwood strewn beach, camping area, kid’s playground, and picnic tables.

Fort Ward Park

On the South end of the island, Fort Ward Park has a wide paved walking path that takes you right along the waterfront.  This one is perfect if you have a little one just learning to ride a bicycle, or someone who needs a level and smooth path for a wheelchair.  There are grassy areas and tables for your picnic, and trails in the woods for a little exercise after the meal. There are also historical signs about the area and bunkers to climb on and explore from when the area was a military base.  It also has a free boat launch ramp!

Battle Point Park

Located in the center of the island, Battle Point Park has lovely trails, a large playground, playing fields, picnic areas, and a pond.  A great location for larger groups!

Waterfront Park

This one in right in downtown Winslow, located behind Town and Country Market.  If you are walking on the ferry from Seattle, this is an easy choice.  The park has a large grassy area, short trails to stroll on, a gorgeous view of Eagle Harbor, and a very nice playground for the kids.  With the market right across the street, you don’t even need to pack a picnic lunch, T&C will gladly put one together for you!

Whatever you decide to do, we hope you have a wonderful weekend!
