“Loving Island Life” The Eleven Winery

A hanging sign for Eleven Winery features a yellow starburst logo above the text "eleven" and "ELEVEN WINERY" in black letters.

This week’s “Loving Island Life” Blog features the Eleven Winery on Bainbridge Island. The Eleven Winery is a husband-and-wife team of Matt and Sarah Albee.  They moved to Bainbridge in 2001 and started the winery in 2003.  After a career as a bicycle racer Matt eventually followed his dream and true calling as a winemaker.  When I asked Matt about the namesake “Eleven” he replied “On a typical modern road bike the smallest cog in the rear cluster has eleven teeth, and it’s the one that produces the maximum gear ratio. Therefore, when you’re at the point in the race when it’s all or nothing, when there’s no choice but to put every ounce of strength and determination you’ve got into the pedals no matter how much you’re already suffering, when you have to give it absolutely everything you’ve got, you use The Eleven.”

Its apparent Matt and Sarah have been using “The Eleven” to grow their extraordinary business on Bainbridge Island.  Their tasting room located in the heart of downtown Winslow is the hub for locals and tourists alike.  It’s a fabulous meeting place to socialize, learn about wine, and catch up on just about anything Bainbridge.  You can find Matt there often in his casual friendly style willing to share his extensive knowledge of wine making or just to shoot the breeze.  His various wines are terrific and joining his wine club is a fun way to learn about the wine making process.  Be sure to stop in and enjoy a glass.  The Eleven Winery is truly a “Loving Island Life” kind of place!
