“Loving Island Life” Bainbridge Parks Hooky Hikes
The “Loving Island Life” blog is being hijacked this week by Sonja’s assistant, Karen. Sonja keeps me hopping most of the time, but recently I’ve been out having some fun and meeting some new people, and I wanted to share that with you.
The island’s friendly, welcoming atmosphere is one reason why Bainbridge is so special. It’s a big part of why I moved here several years ago, and I know that’s true for a lot of Sonja’s clients. If you’re looking for some avenues for making new friends, I have a suggestion.
I want to tell you about our amazing parks and recreation department. The official name is Bainbridge Island Metro Park and Recreation District (whew!) Check them out here biparks.org. They really are an island treasure, with well organized activities for all ages and interests. Whether you are interested in aquatics, sports & fitness, arts & cultural programs, or senior programs you are sure to find something fun in their online catalogue of activities.
You’ll have a hard time choosing which activity to try first. I highly recommend their Hooky Hikes, which are on Wednesdays or Sundays from spring through autumn. I’m just back from a hike to Lake Twenty-two, which is near Granite Falls. I didn’t have to drive, met some really nice fellow hikers, and most of the hikes are led by the very experienced and knowledgeable Ranger Sciacca.
Speaking of Ranger Sciacca, you probably of know him from his band Ranger and the Re-Arrangers. You may have seen them playing at the Island Gallery for Art Walk, or at other venues on the island. They have gigs all over Washington, and the next time you’ll hear the group playing in public on the island will be on the Town and Country stage for our Grand Old 4th. Their music is described as “Gypsy jazz and their repertoire includes swing standards, traditional Gypsy melodies, the music of Django Reinhardt, and Ranger’s unique originals.” It’s the kind of music that makes you want to get up and dance. Check out their website for a calendar of where they will be playing, some videos, and samples of their music. rangerswings.com.
I’d better get back to work now, but I’ll hope to see you all out on the trails and waterways, meeting new friends and “Loving Island Life!”
